SCULPTORS AND TERRACOTTA
May 10 - 28, 2012
In the ludicrous process of accomplishing his/her oeuvre, the creator of plastic shapes, the visual artist, constructs and deconstructs the shapes through different techniques and approaches. Without prejudices, and far from being tributary to certain clichés identifying modelling and clay burning with “depreciative decorativism” (minor arts’ hall- and earmark), the sculptors have always used this technique, this exercise or this visual discourse, namely, Ceramics. They sometimes stop here, at other times the shape will be carried forward in other materials, through other technologies.
The exhibition presents 7 of the most worthwhile contemporary artists, an edifying and prestigious echelon of this demarche – Réka Chapo Dup, Gheorghe Marcu, Aurel şi Lenuţa Vlad, Mircea Roman, Liviu Russu and Liana Axinte –, mature artists whose career is already notorious. All the displayed works, achieved of clay, but in different techniques (free modelling, mould pressing, imprint, relief, ronde-bosse, highrelief; engobed, patinated or lacking colour intervention; burnt in oxidant or reductant atmosphere, in gas- or in electric ceramic kilns), breathe the joy of modelling, of shape inquiry, of the fire fascination and the ancestral gesture. “The terracotta, the sculptors and the ceramic art”, the syntagm encountered in the title of this curatorial project, is a metaphor permitting me to suggest the observance of the canon and, in the same time, the exception from the rule through which the terracotta the artist first models takes off from the experiment and becomes experience.
