A BRIEF HISTORY OF...
Opened at the end of 2011, GALATEEA CONTEMPORARY ART is Romania’s first art gallery of contemporary ceramics opened after the 90s. Located at 132, Victoria Ave., the gallery enjoys a strategic location along a touristic venue including important cultural landmarks such as the National Museum of Art of Romania, the Museum of Art Collections, the National University of Arts and the George Enescu National Museum.
For many years, the space of the Gallery hosted various art exhibitions. It started in 1953, when the Visual Artists' Union of Romania was allocated this 45 sqm space to be used as an exhibition space. In 1955, Arch. Eugen Vernescu set it up to accommodate V.A.U members’ painting and sculpture exhibitions. In 1955, Arch. Mircea Coradino changed spectacularly the gallery’s interior and front view, prompting the art critics Mihai Ispir and Mihai Drişcu to name it “GALATEEA Gallery”.
In 2009, a Group of dedicated ceramic artists, namely Ioana Şetran, Cristina Popescu Russu, Gherghina Costea, Vasile Cercel, Georgiana Cozma, Romana Mateiaş, Aniela Ovadiuc, Mónika Pădureţ, Bianca Boeroiu, Simona Tănăsescu, Cristina Bolborea and Adela Bonaţ, initiated a new project for remodelling the space in view of hosting contemporary ceramic art events. In the meantime Nicolae Moldovan, Lucia Lobonţ and, more recently, Vlad Basarab have joined the group. Cristina Popescu Russu was designated project manager. Through a relentless effort and the whole team’s voluntary implication, the project was successfully completed and the new Galateea Contemporary Art Gallery was launched in December 2011. Starting with 2012, the Gallery was included in the international art galleries' network.
Recently more members from the younger generation of ceramists have joined the Group: Anca Vintilă Dragu, Marius Stanciu, Iulian Vîrtopeanu, Oana Florică, Vlad Basarab, Nicolae Moldovan.
During the past nearly ten years of activity, Galateea gallery organized over 100 cultural events, both group and individual exhibitions with the participation of an impressive number of native and international artists.
Galateea has become a true brand of the Romanian contemporary ceramics. Its success is entirely due to the team spirit and the ongoing voluntary initiatives of the members of this group of enthusiastic ceramists.
