the first art gallery in Romania dedicated to contemporary ceramics
The broad scope of the GALATEEA CONTEMPORARY ART gallery is to promote Romanian contemporary ceramic art in a close cooperation and partnership with similar international galleries and art centres. The exhibitional program is coordinated by a group of ceramic artists who initiated this artistic endeavour having in mind the creation of a space where established ceramists could be acknowledged, young creators launched and promoted while paying homage to masters at the same time. An ideal place for meetings and debates on the ceramic art’s perspectives in the current international context, yet taking into account the new concepts relating ceramics to other visual-art fields. A live space, capable of generating a sustained dialogue between the artists and the public, a way of making this fascinating fire art better understood, acknowledged and appreciated.
Opened in the end of 2011, GALATEEA CONTEMPORARY ART is Romania’s first gallery of ceramics opened after the 90s. Located at 132, Victoria Ave., the gallery enjoys a strategic location along a tourist route crossing important cultural landmarks such as the National Museum of Art of Romania, the Museum of Art Collections, the National University of Arts and the George Enescu National Museum.
For many years, the space of the Gallery hosted various art exhibitions. It started in 1953, when the Fine Artist’s Union (U.A.P. / F.A.U.) of Romania was alloted this 45 sqm space to be used as an exhibition space. In 1955, Arch. Eugen Vernescu set it up to accommodate F.A.U members’ painting and sculpture exhibitions. In 1955, Arch. Mircea Coradino changed spectacularly the gallery’s interior and front view, prompting the art critics Mihai Ispir and Mihai Drişcu to name it “GALATEEA Gallery”.
In 2009, a Group of ceramic artists, namely Ioana Şetran, Cristina Popescu Russu, Gherghina Costea, Vasile Cercel, Georgiana Cozma, Romana Mateiaş, Aniela Ovadiuc, Monika Pădureţ, Bianca Boeroiu, Simona Tănăsescu, Cristina Bolborea and Adela Bonaţ, initiated a new project for remodelling the space in view of hosting contemporary ceramic-art events. In the meantime Nicolae Moldovan, Lucia Lobonţ and, more recently, Vlad Basarab have joined the group. Cristina Popescu Russu was designated project manager. Through a tireless effort and the whole team’s voluntary implication, the project was successfully completed and the Galateea Gallery was relaunched in December 2011. Starting with 2012, the Gallery was included in the international art galleries' network.
