NICOLAE MOLDOVAN
b. 1970
To simplify a shape to its essence has always been my concern, becoming the basic idea in my works. The neat, essentialized shapes originate from the archaic models encountered in neolithic ceramic art. I borrowed from them the technique of object moulding and decoration, which I adapted to my sculptures; and these sculptures live first due to the force of the main shape (“mother shape”), which, from time to time, interacts with elements of different consistency and materiality (wood, metal). In a complex world, where the artistic object must look as shocking and violent as possible, I resume to the plain shape, to a fair and preciously patinated disjunction, trying to induce an oasis of calm and apparent simplicity.
