In an ever-changing world, where the environment has a great influence upon us, I propose a deep journey into our own being. The exhibition “Evolution of Identity: A Journal of Personal Space” is meant to be a refuge for introspection and investigation, each portrait illustrating a page of my inner diary. The installation presents the way in which the environment, the events and our interactions can change and (re)shape our perception upon our self, showing that, through each experience and mutual action, a complex story that defines us is born in every space.

Galateea Contemporary Art Gallery exhibits Evolution of Identity: A Journal of Personal Space, a mixed-media installation made by Elena Pîrvu, a ceramic artist.
The work consists in an ensemble of more than 1500 pieces, portraits and conic shapes resembling little bells displayed around a symbolic cloud.
In ceramicistʼs vision, the fragility and versatility of the material render manʼs interchangeable identity according to the transformations occurring in his/her personal space. Yet, what is, in fact, a personal space? How could we identify it? What exactly influences it? How could we create a personal space, or, most of all, how could we change it? The exhibition “Evolution of Identity: A Journal of Personal Space” tries to offer answers to these questions.
The mixed-media installation is shaped like a cumulonimbus, i.e. like a rain / a storm cloud. Unlike the black, the dark or the sullen cloud, Elena Pîrvuʼs cumulonimbus stands for a puzzle, for a story made of symbolic elements.
The cloud, a symbol of metamorphosis, acts for nebulosity, for the indefinite, mysterious and ineffable, for the hidden reality. Accompanied by the ‘rainʼ of portraits and cones, the cloud recomposes the journal of emotions and thoughts in artistʼs personal space. Inspired by her inner feelings and sensory experiences, Elena Pîrvu transposes in outlined portraits a ‘stormʼ of sentiments and moods closely related to both people and environment. The reiterated portrait, a simili-pattern of the exhibitor, is personalized through colour interventions, textures and sgraffited graphisms, through prints and delicate embossments. Defined by specific features, the portraits render the states of mind generated by the changes occurring in the personal space, yet also in her interlocutorsʼ or in the context in which the artist, qua reference character, interacts with the environment and community.
The shapes, resembling truncated cones, are displayed in contrast with the ‘rainʼ of portraits expressing Elena Pîrvuʼs experiences, because, after all, shaped apiece, these small truncated cones, with indented uneven edges and rounded tips, acquire a bell shape. The rain, a vitalizing and purifying symbol, is rendered via these small bellsʼ vibrations, and the resulting sounds call for meditation, for finding oneʼs inner peace.
Each portrait stands for a moment in time, for a turning point in artistʼs life, for an instant which has (re)modelled her identity. By means of this cloud of ever-changing emotions, Elena Pîrvu demonstrates that the outside world, by everything defining it, can subtly influence, either beneficially or evilly, a personality.
