Galateea Contemporary Art Gallery, Calea Victoriei 132, Bucharest, invites you on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 6 p.m., to the opening of the exhibition Unidentified Objects by artist Dana Catona, curated by Nicolae Moldovan. The opening speech will be given by Ion Bogdan Lefter. The exhibition will be open from May 21 to June 16.
Unidentified Objects exhibition presents ceramic works made in the last period of creation and is composed of relatively small pieces. The predilection for miniature forms is a result of the interest in fragility seen as an attribute of vulnerability.
Continuing the exhibitions where the research was focused around the archetypal element of the house, the human figure or the writing seen as an element both visual and conceptual, Unidentified Objects is characterized by a special interest in the materiality of ceramics. This type of relationship is offered to the public in a game of sight and the intention of reconstructing gestures, but also of symbolic interpretations.
The ceramic pieces are mostly explorations of flat surfaces and implicitly of the line, the work with the ceramic material being done through spontaneous and expressive gestures. The association with the textile material that we find in several works, speaks of the contrast between the rough surface of the ceramic material and the malleability of the textile, but also of the history of the two mediums of expression.
The works do not have a concrete title, the title of the exhibition, Unidentified Objects, emphasizing the fact that the works cannot be linked to a thematic area, but rather to a state, in a blend of knowability and mystery.
Dana Catona is a visual artist and poet, associate professor at the Faculty of Arts and Design, West University of Timișoara.
