Galateea Contemporary Art Gallery presents a fairy-tale ambience: the ceramic installation “Nigredo” conceived by the visual artist Alina Tudor.
The artistic searches approach the alchemic concept nigredo, one of matter’s decomposition stages preceding philosopherʼs stone, a moment of inner transformation in view of its rebirth.
Playing with clay and with objects taken from the childrenʼs universe, ‘decomposing’ her souvenirs into symbols, the artist goes through a process of conversion. In this installation, Alina Tudor considers the nigredo stage a necessary phase of introspection, of becoming, of purification and spiritual rebirth.
The author remakes the game thinking that, in the becoming process, toys are defining, as they contribute to one’s identity modelling. A man stands out through his/her childhood games and dreams, the more as both game and dream link past to future, and the projections of the unconscious highlight a personality.
Just like with alchemists, Alina Tudorʼs studio stands for a laboratory in which, after passing through different stages, the ceramic material turns into a ‘universe’ covered by ash. “Nigredo” reactivates memory by connecting it with origins, with the dark earth.
Like the reborn from its own ashes of the Phoenix bird, a symbol of permanent renewal, the artist edifies a world of memories recoverable nowadays. And modelling, building, through game of the elements emotionally charged, helps deciphering some of the stages that prove essential in individual becoming.
Joining the patch of grass, the forest of ashy-grey trees with textured shades invites to meditation and dreaming, while the coloured toys and the drawings discovered among the different shades of black lure into play.
